There are three layers to the roofing, the first being the sheathing. The sheathing acts like a layer of rubber in between the underlying materials. It is usually made of some sort of asphalt or tar and protects the rest of the roof from getting damaged from weather and abuse. Another layer would be the membrane or felt layer which protects everything beneath from getting damaged, such as the metal framing and columns, as well as anything painted on the roof. Lastly, there is the roofing felt, which serves as a protective layer against moisture and direct sunlight.
When discussing the topic of roofing, there are many types of roofing available. One of those options is to use pre-fabricated composite materials which come in rolls similar to paper towels, and they are lightweight and easy to install in various types of climates. The other option would be to use clay tiles which are durable and relatively cheap. The clay tiles are weather resistant and are made out of poly clay, and while these tiles are not ideal for extremely harsh climates, they do make good roofs for much lighter climates where the clay tiles would be more appropriate. Another type of roofing that is becoming popular in homes all over the world are clay roofing tiles which can be used in climates from the hot desert to the cold arctic, where extreme weather conditions are the norm.
